Video Conferences Today - Part 2
The Technology of Video Conferencing
A video teleconference system (VTC) relies mainly in digital compression technology. This data-condensing innovation allows live compression of video and audio streams. Most of the benefits of video conferencing cannot materialize if the files and data that are streamed are incapable of being compressed since the original size is too big.
There are basically two kinds of VTC systems: desktop and dedicated.
Desktop systems are usually made up of separate components that are attached to computers. These components, usually in the form of hardware boards, have the required codec and transmission interfaces and converts the PC into a VTC unit. A wide variety of microphones and cameras can be used with the add-on board. These accessories will ensure that you’ll be able to enjoy all the capabilities and benefits of video conferencing..
Majority of the desktop units are compatible only with the H.323 standard. Video conferences that are facilitated by or made through computers are also known as e-meetings. These electronic gatherings or assemblies are becoming the most popular benefit of video conferencing.
On the other hand, dedicated systems have a single unit that already contains all the necessary parts and accessories. The unit or console has a top quality camera than can be remotely operated. The camera’s remote control features include pan and tilt commands, as well as zooming functions. Thus, it is appropriately called a PTZ camera. The camera is an indispensable component of a VTC unit. You won’t be able to enjoy the primary benefit of video conferencing without it.
The console holds the control computer, the program or equipment-based codec, the modem, and all electrical interfaces. Microphones that can be moved or adjusted in different directions are attached to the console. A monitor that either has a loudspeaker and a video projector, or both, completes the console’s accessories.
There are different kinds of dedicated VTC units.
The first type is the large group VTC that cannot be carried around. This VTC device is primarily made for auditoriums and other spacious venues. Its components are costly. A PTZ camera is indispensable for this kind of VTC.
The second is the small group VTC that has less expensive components. Despite being smaller than the first type, it is still not portable. Small group VTCs are designed for use in small meeting rooms. A PTZ camera is also necessary.
As for the third type, the individual VTC is mainly designed for personal use. Its console could be easily carried around, and already features an integrated camera, loudspeakers, and microphones.
